Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication

This guide will walk you through the process of setting up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for your account.

Prerequisites

Before setting up Two-Factor Authentication, ensure you have:

  • An active account with administrator privileges
  • A smartphone with an authenticator app installed (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy)
  • A backup phone number or recovery email for account recovery

Step-by-Step Setup Process

1. Navigate to Security Settings

  1. Log in to your account
  2. Go to Account Settings in the top-right menu
  3. Select the Security tab
  4. Find the Two-Factor Authentication section and click Enable

2. Choose Authentication Method

Select your preferred authentication method:

  • Authenticator App (Recommended): Uses a time-based one-time password (TOTP) app
  • SMS Verification: Sends verification codes via text message
  • Email Verification: Sends verification codes to your recovery email

3. Set Up Authentication App

If you choose the authenticator app method:

  1. Open your authenticator app on your mobile device
  2. Scan the QR code displayed on your screen
  3. Enter the 6-digit verification code from your authenticator app
  4. Click Verify

4. Save Recovery Codes

After successful setup:

  1. Download or copy your recovery codes
  2. Store these codes in a secure location
  3. These codes can be used if you lose access to your authentication device

5. Complete Setup

  1. Confirm your settings
  2. Click Finish Setup
  3. You will be logged out and prompted to log back in using both your password and the new second factor

Testing Your Setup

After setup, try logging out and back in to ensure your Two-Factor Authentication is working correctly.

Recovery Options

If you lose access to your authentication device:

  1. Use one of your recovery codes during login
  2. Contact your system administrator if you’ve lost both your device and recovery codes

Troubleshooting

  • Time Synchronization Issues: Ensure your device’s time is correctly synchronized
  • App Not Working: Try using a recovery code and then set up a different authenticator app
  • Lost Device: Use recovery codes to regain access and set up 2FA on a new device
